Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you're right

Those are the words of Henry Ford, and they fit right in with today’s times. Many non-profit organizations are seeing a drop in donations and attributing this to hard economic times.

But just the other day, a grieving family was heartened to receive a donation in honor of their beautiful daughter from a family that did not even know them, but had read about the tragedy. “We want you to know we are close to having to walk away from our home,” the donors wrote but still felt they had to send the donation.

Some people may not be able to give as much as they wish, or as much as they used to, but they still want to.

That’s where the original thinking of the likes of Henry Ford can come in. Many organizations print wish lists in their newsletters, hoping someone who cares about their cause may be able to donate that computer or those used towels they need.

From all of these lists, there is surely something anyone, even someone who is also going through hard times, can give. We would like to ask all of the local organizations that print such wish lists to send them on to us, so that we can print as many of them as possible now during the holiday weeks ahead and until the end of the year.

Lists may be sent via e-mail to lmedit@optimum.net, by fax to 378-0287 or by mail to L&M Publications, 1840 Merrick Avenue, Merrick 11566. We also have a mail slot at our office for dropoffs; a copy of the organization’s newsletter or website will do.

We know our readers care about their community, simply because they subscribe to their community newspaper. And we are sure that some of them must have the items our local non-profit organizations need.
